Sustainable Food Systems & Tool Library Resilience AmeriCorps VISTA

 

Salmon Valley Stewardship (SVS) and the Creative Confluence Tool Library are hiring an AmeriCorps VISTA member to address food security and systemic barriers to economic mobility through capacity building, community engagement, increasing volunteer and educational resources, and designing creative long-term funding strategies.

Hours and Compensation: Full Time, (40 hours/week) - 1 year funded position, may apply for up to 2 additional years subject to program availability and AmeriCorps member performance.

  • AmeriCorps VISTA living allowance: $478.73 per week

  • Education award upon completion of service term: $7,395 or elect to receive cash stipend

Position Overview:  

The AmeriCorps VISTA will primarily work to elevate SVS’s Food Systems Program and the Creative Confluence Tool Library, with a secondary focus on other SVS programs.

​

Salmon Valley Stewardship Food Systems Program:

Facilitate a community collaborative group to foster connections with a network of stakeholders working to enhance local and sustainable food systems. Drive momentum forward with this group in three key initiatives:

  • Develop a local food gleaning program by building a sustainable volunteer network that will identify and collect extra garden produce and fruit, coordinating re-distribution efforts to underserved and low-income communities and other local food pathways.

 

  • Implement a community commercial kitchen funding campaign, create strategies for long-term viability through successful kitchen operation, budgeting, and management.

 

  • Create systems and resources with the Lemhi County Farmers Market to increase vendor and community collaboration and provide financial stability.

​

Assist program staff at SVS to elevate food security and sovereignty through education and outreach, food producer and community education, fostering collaborations with indigenous and agency partners, grant writing, and developing sustainable community food programs.

​

Creative Confluence Tool Library:

The Tool Library is run by a dedicated group of volunteers and fiscally sponsored by Salmon Valley Stewardship. Collaborate with Tool Library board and volunteers to better address poverty by expanding the impact and long-term sustainability of this important tool sharing program.

  • Develop a volunteer engagement and training strategy, collaborating with partners to create a community education program.

 

  • Create and implement strategies to increase program access for underserved and limited-income community members.

 

  • Design a long-term plan for program sustainability through funding opportunities and creative partnerships.

Additional Capacity Building at SVS:

Assist staff to build capacity, conduct outreach activities, and foster connections with SVS’s other programs (including Natural Resources, Pollinator and Native Plants Restoration, Trails Stewardship, and Outdoor Education).

 

Preferred Qualifications:

  • High School degree or G.E.D., some college or technical school experience preferred

  • Communication, facilitation, and community engagement skills

  • Familiarity with social media, creating flyers, and sharing outreach stories

  • Experience with fundraising activities, motivated to learn grant writing

  • Ability to work independently, create and develop initiatives and collaborations

  • Motivation to help a small community increase food security and economic mobility

Restoration Program Coordinator

Salmon Valley Stewardship (SVS) is seeking a highly motivated individual to amplify native plant restoration efforts and enhance efficiencies of partners working to achieve watershed health and invest in resilient landscapes in the Salmon River Region of Central Idaho. 

 

Classification: Full Time (30-40 hours/week) *contingent on funding*

Salary: $20-$24 hourly, DOE 

Benefits: Vacation & sick days, 10 paid holidays, monthly health care stipend, phone stipend, training and development opportunities. 

Location: Salmon, Idaho 

Reports to: Restoration Program Manager 

Start dates: Spring/Summer 2025 

 

About Us: 

SVS’s Native Plants Restoration Program has grown in size substantially since its pilot year in 2023 and has worked in partnership with other land management agencies to lead the effort in restoring healthy and balanced plant communities to the region. The program conducts a wide variety of work including phenology monitoring, population mapping, seed collection, seed cleaning, and reseeding along with hosting education and volunteer events engaging and teaching the public. 

 

This position will have two primary responsibilities: 

The Restoration Program Coordinator will work alongside the Program Manager and in partnership with the Salmon-Challis National Forest (SCNF) Botany, Invasives, and Pollinators program (BIP) to assist in restoration efforts identifying and implementing local solutions to address the need for accelerating the pace and scale of native plant restoration in the area. Work is predominantly in sagebrush steppe and high desert habitat. Coordinator will work to monitor and map local vegetation populations, collect and process seed, supervise interns and technicians, manage data collection and quality control, host volunteer events and assist in reseeding efforts. 

 

The Restoration Program Coordinator will work alongside the Regional Wildlife Diversity Biologist at the Idaho Department of Fish & Game to manage and coordinate the Milkweed and Monarch Monitoring Program. Coordinator will work to develop outreach materials for the program, recruit and manage community-based citizen science volunteers, host and implement volunteer training and end of season events, and provide regular check-ins to volunteers during the monitoring season.  

 

Position will be 40 hours a week during the field season (Summer-Fall), with reduced hours in the Winter-Spring. Time will be spent about 50% in the field, 25% in the workshop, and 25% in the office. 

 

Primary tasks and responsibilities include but are not limited to: 

  • Field going activities such as plant identification, phenology monitoring, voucher collection, rare plant surveys, population mapping, seed collection and reseeding, efforts. 

  • Workshop work such as seed cleaning, processing, and testing, seed mix design, seedball production, and seed storage. 

  • Office work such as outreach, program development and planning, creating educational materials and coordinating events. 

  • Supervise seasonal SVS technicians and interns working for this program and other SVS projects. 

  • Researching most up to date sciences and procuring equipment necessary to achieve restoration goals. 

  • Manage program outreach, host volunteer events, and lead educational activities. 

  • Assist in leveraging existing funding sources in securing new funding through proposal and grant writing. 

  • Data quality control and database uploading. 

  • Coordinator may be expected to assist with other SVS programs as needed. 

 

Preferred Qualifications 

  • Experience or education in botany, plant sciences, ecology, biology, natural resource management, or a related field. 

  • Strong plant identification skills and knowledge of plant taxonomy and biology. 

  • Experience working in sagebrush steppe and high desert ecosystems with knowledge of their ecology and the threats these systems face. 

  • Ability to work independently and cooperatively within a team environment, experience in leading a field team or other supervisory positions. 

  • Experience collecting data in the field using tablets or phones. Ability to process, organize, and synthesize data using common software like Excel. 

  • Knowledge of ArcGIS software, AGOL, Fieldmaps, Survey123, Avenza, and Garmin. 

  • A safe driving record and high comfort level operating a 4WD vehicle on rough roads. 

  • Capable of conducting field work safely in rough terrain and in harsh environmental conditions. 

  • Confidence and experience with community outreach, communicating with the public verbally or in writing. 

  • Experience working with a variety of project partners like private landowners, public land management agencies, and non-profits.  

  • Possess skills suitable for grant-writing, including attention to detail and creative/technical writing skills. 

  • Hardworking and self-motivated. Organizational skills and the ability to handle deadlines and complex projects. 

  • Willingness to work flexible hours and long days.
